How the tracker reads an alert

Each alert comes with the help that fits it and the neighborhoods inside its outline.

  • Flash flood warnings and flood advisories link to flood cleanup, water extraction and sewage cleanup, because runoff that crossed the ground is Category 3 water.
  • Severe thunderstorm warnings link to ceiling and roof leaks and flood cleanup, since hail and wind driven rain open roofs while the street floods.
  • Wind and dust alerts link to roof leak help.
  • Freeze alerts link to burst pipes.

Monsoon season in Las Vegas

NWS Las Vegas says monsoon moisture usually arrives in July and August, storms build over the mountains and move into the valley, and the monsoon fades by September. The Regional Flood Control District names July through September for sudden downpours and fast flash flooding, even on sunny days.

NOAA 1991 to 2020 monthly normals in inches. July through September are darker. Their averages look small because the rain comes in a few big storms.

Only 30 days in the NOAA record back to 1937 brought an inch of rain or more at the airport, and 16 of them fell between July and September. The wettest was August 21, 1957, at 2.58 inches. October 11, 2026 tied the wettest October day at 1.08 inches.

Storm tracker questions

Where does the storm tracker get its data?
From the National Weather Service API at api.weather.gov, for the Las Vegas Valley zone and Clark County. It refreshes about every five minutes.
What does a flash flood warning mean?
NWS issues a flash flood warning when flash flooding is happening or about to start in the warned area. Stay out of washes and flooded streets.
How does the tracker know which neighborhoods are affected?
Most warnings come with an outline. The tracker checks that outline against the center point of every neighborhood we cover and lists the ones inside it.
When is monsoon season in Las Vegas?
NWS Las Vegas says monsoon storms usually come in July and August and fade by September. The flood control district names July through September.
What if the tracker does not load?
The National Weather Service API is sometimes slow. Check weather.gov/vef directly, and call or text if water is already inside.
