Emergency Water Extraction When the Floor Is Under Water

Emergency water extraction pulls standing water out of carpet, pad and hard floors with pumps and weighted wands, so drying can start the same day.

Before anyone shows up

  1. Stay out of the water if it is near outlets, cords or appliances.
  2. Shut the main water valve. Learn where it is today if you never have.
  3. Cut power to the wet area only if you can reach the breaker from a dry spot. If not, leave it and tell the crew.
  4. Take photos and a short video before anything moves. Wide shots first, then close ups of the water line on walls and furniture.
  5. Lift small items, rugs and anything with wood legs onto dry ground.

What extraction really removes

Most of the water in a wet room is not in the puddle. It is in the carpet pad, the bottom of the drywall and the space under cabinets. A truck mount or portable extractor with a weighted wand squeezes water out of carpet and pad. Hard floors get squeegeed and vacuumed. Pad that has soaked up dirty water is usually pulled and thrown out.

Extraction is the cheapest drying there is. Every gallon pulled out as liquid is a gallon the dehumidifiers do not have to pull from the air later.

Clean, gray or black water

The source decides how the water is handled.

  • Clean water comes from a supply line, a tub overflow or a toilet tank.
  • Gray water is dirty water such as washer discharge or a toilet overflow with urine.
  • Black water is sewage or water that ran across the ground outside, like monsoon runoff under a door.

Clean water left sitting gets worse. A foul smell is a sign it is going bad, and the job moves up a category.

Extraction prices in plain numbers

Fixr's national figures from January 2025 run $3.75 to $4.25 per square foot for clean water, $4.10 to $6.50 for gray water and $7 to $7.50 for black water. Labor runs $70 to $200 an hour and an emergency fee of $50 to $200 is common. Ask which rates apply before work starts.

Questions people ask

How long does water extraction take?
For one or two rooms it is often a few hours. The drying that follows usually takes days, and the crew should check readings each visit.
Can I use a shop vac instead?
A shop vac helps on hard floors. It cannot pull water out of carpet pad or wall bottoms, which is where most of it hides.
Is it safe to walk on a wet carpet?
Only if the power to that area is off and the water is clean. Treat sewage or outdoor runoff as unsafe to touch.
Will my carpet have to be replaced?
Carpet soaked with clean water can often be dried in place. Pad that soaked up gray or black water is usually thrown out.
What does extraction cost per square foot?
Fixr's January 2025 national range is $3.75 to $4.25 for clean water, $4.10 to $6.50 for gray and $7 to $7.50 for black water.
Should I turn off my water heater?
If the leak came from the heater or its lines, shut its water supply and turn off its gas or power. Ask a plumber before restarting it.
Why does standing water start to smell?
Clean water picks up dirt and grows bacteria as it sits. The smell means it is turning into dirty water and needs more care.
Do I need to move out during extraction?
Usually not for clean water in a few rooms. Sewage, a ceiling collapse or lost power can make the home unsafe to stay in.
What should I photograph for insurance?
Wide shots of each room, the water line on walls, damaged items with labels showing, and the source of the leak.
Can water get under vinyl plank flooring?
Yes. Water slips through the seams and sits on the slab or subfloor. A meter reading tells you if it is trapped.
