Slab Leak Signs Every Las Vegas Homeowner Should Know

The clearest slab leak signs are a water bill that climbs for no reason, a warm or damp spot on the floor and a meter that keeps moving with every tap off.

What a slab leak is

A slab home has its water lines running under or inside the concrete floor. The city's survey of 1940s Huntridge homes describes exactly that kind of house, one story frame homes on slab foundations. When a line under the slab fails, water goes into the ground or up through the concrete. Nothing drips from a ceiling, so it can run for a long time.

Eight signs, from most to least common

  1. A higher water bill with no change in how you use water.
  2. A warm spot on tile or vinyl, often over a hot water line.
  3. Damp carpet or a musty smell near a baseboard with no leak in sight.
  4. Running water sounds when every tap is off.
  5. Flooring that lifts, cups or loosens in one area.
  6. A water heater that runs all the time, which can mean hot water is leaking out.
  7. Low water pressure at several fixtures at once.
  8. New cracks in floor tile that line up with a wet spot.

The two minute meter test

  1. Turn off every tap, the dishwasher, the washer, the ice maker and the sprinklers.
  2. Open the meter box near the curb and find the small leak dial.
  3. If it spins, water is moving.
  4. Close the main valve at the house and look again. Still moving means the leak is outside, between the meter and the house. Stopped means the leak is inside.

If the leak is inside and no fixture is dripping, a slab line is a strong suspect. A plumber with listening gear can pin it down.

Why this matters more in central Las Vegas

Our radius holds some of the oldest housing in the valley. Census estimates put the median build year at 1971 in ZIP 89107, 1974 in 89101 and 1976 in 89104. LVVWD rates its water as very hard, 16 to 17 grains per gallon, and advises replacing plumbing parts routinely. Old lines carrying hard water for decades are the ones that fail.

What happens after the leak is found

A plumber either repairs the spot under the slab or reroutes the line through walls or the attic. Then comes drying. Concrete gives up water slowly and tile or vinyl on top slows it more. Expect flooring over the wet area to come up. Wood floors that cupped should not be sanded until readings are back to normal, or they crown later.

Who pays

Policies differ a lot here. Many cover the water damage from a sudden leak but not the pipe repair itself. Keep the plumber's written finding and the date. Triple I notes that damage from poor upkeep is not covered, which is why a quick response after the first sign helps your claim.

Questions people ask

What is the most common sign of a slab leak?
A water bill that rises with no change in use is often the first sign people notice.
Can a slab leak fix itself?
No. A leaking line keeps leaking until it is repaired or rerouted.
Is a warm floor always a slab leak?
Not always, but a warm spot on tile or vinyl over a hot water line is a classic sign. Run the meter test to check.
How long can a slab leak go before I notice?
It can run for weeks or months, because the water often drains into the ground under the slab.
Do slab leaks cause mold?
They can, under flooring and at the bottom of walls. EPA says wet areas should be dried within 24 to 48 hours.
Is rerouting better than cutting the slab?
It often avoids breaking up floors. A plumber picks the method based on where the leak is and how old the lines are.
How do I find my water meter?
It is usually in a box near the curb in front of the house.
Can I keep using water with a slab leak?
If the leak is on a hot line, shutting the water heater's supply can slow it. Call a plumber soon either way.
Why are older Las Vegas homes at risk?
Older supply lines have carried very hard water for decades, and LVVWD advises replacing plumbing parts routinely.
Does a slab leak hurt the foundation?
Water under a slab can move soil. Have the leak fixed fast and ask a plumber if they see signs of movement.
